2014 Late Fall

White-throated Sparrow's head

October - November 7, 2014 The month of October had the highest capture number of the fall banding season with 3,495 newly-banded birds. We also had our 3rd biggest day ever on October 23rd when we caught a total of 602 birds. Things began to slow down as migration came to an end in November, but overall, this fall was one of the most successful (and fun!) seasons at PARC. Throughout the entire Fall season (from August 1st to November 7th), we banded 7,139 birds and collected data on … [Read more...] about 2014 Late Fall

2014 Early Fall

Chimney Swift, close-up

August - September 2014 Fall banding began August 1st and lasted through November 7th. The top ten species for the fall include: Yellow-rumped Warbler (625), Cedar Waxwing (513), American Goldfinch (452), Magnolia Warbler (340), Gary Catbird (327), White-throated Sparrow (309), Ruby-Crowned Kinglet (267), Purple Finch (263), Swainson’s Thrush (262), and Ruby-throated Hummingbird (245). With such a large diversity of beautiful and fascinating species to highlight, we’ve separated the season … [Read more...] about 2014 Early Fall

2014 Summer

Belted Kingfisher's head

June - July 2014 Since banding efforts are reduced in the summer months, things are not quite as busy here at Powdermill. And yet, the banding lab caught 935 birds from the beginning of June to the end of July. In June many of our resident species are nesting. They stay within their territories to raise and take care of their young and therefore we find fewer in our nets. Of the 212 birds across 36 species that were caught over the month, the top five species were: Cedar Waxing (40), … [Read more...] about 2014 Summer

2014 Spring

Black-billed Cuckoo's head

April - May 2014 After crunching the numbers, we discovered this was one of our best spring seasons in years. Truth be told we knew it all along, but the numbers and pictures don't lie. We banded 2,699 birds across 100 species, the most we've banded in a single spring since 2007. In addition, we processed another 1,363 birds that were already banded. Our top 10 species for the Spring were: Ruby-crowned Kinglet (294), Magnolia Warbler (215), Cedar Waxwing (148), Ruby-throated … [Read more...] about 2014 Spring

2014 Winter

Tufted Titmouse

November 11, 2013 - March 30, 2014 Over the winter we banded a total of 379 birds of 23 different species. Almost three quarters (72%) of these new captures were represented by our top three species (pictured above, left to right): Dark-eye Junco (115), American Goldfinch (112) and Song Sparrow (45). While captures of the first two species were spread out over the season, it is interesting to note that the majority of the Song Sparrows (39) were banded in … [Read more...] about 2014 Winter

2013 Spring and Summer

Tree Swallow

April - July 2013 During the months of April and May, the banding station was open for a total of 50 days on which we banded a total of 2,381 birds of 94 different species. Our top ten species, representing 1,335 individuals (56% of banded birds) were: Ruby-crowned Kinglet (370), Cedar Waxwing (300), Gray Catbird (112), Magnolia Warbler (105), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (94), Swamp Sparrow (80), White-throated Sparrow (75), American Goldfinch (69), Common Yellowthroat (65) and Yellow Warbler … [Read more...] about 2013 Spring and Summer
