PICTORIAL HIGHLIGHTS, WEEK
OF 4/24-4/29/01
-
Very cold and clear overnight with northerly winds
and heavy frost at dawn on 4/29. It became a beautiful, sunny spring
day, but our rate of bird captures (following a second night with winds
out of the north), not surprisingly, was the lowest recorded this week.
We banded two adult (ASY) male Yellow Warblers
and an ASY male Kentucky Warbler,
the latter being new for the spring.

-
Five new species banded for the season on 4/28:
Spotted
Sandpiper (below left), Northern
Rough-winged Swallow,
Gray
Catbird (although a returning banded catbird
was recaptured on 4/26), Common Grackle, and, best of all (especially because
we missed banding this species altogther last year) was a Worm-eating
Warbler (below right).

-
Four new species for the spring banded on the
afternoon of 4/25 (no banding in the morning due to meetings): House
Wren, Red-eyed
Vireo,
Common Yellowthroat,
and a spectacular ASY male Rose-breasted Grosbeak
that showed off his rose underwings for the camera, too!

-
4/24 was a RED LETTER
day
for the Powdermill banding program--we banded our 400,000th
bird !
-
Also, we had our first spring captures for Wood
Thrush, Blue-winged
and Yellow warblers,
Northern
Waterthrush,
Ovenbird,
Solitary
Sandpiper, and White
eyed Vireo (below)
